The City of Toronto recently awarded Graham Construction a $236.5-million contract for the Effluent Disinfection System project at the Ashbridges Bay Treatment Plant.
Under this contract, Graham will replace the existing chlorine-based effluent disinfection system with an ultraviolet (UV) disinfection facility, states a release.
The project is already underway and expected to be completed in November 2021.
The contract requires three major phases of construction:
- excavation of the ash lagoon (hazardous material) and backfill, plant water pumping station upgrades and seawall substation upgrades as well as upgrades to existing seawall gates;
- a new disinfection building including an associated UV treatment system, effluent and bypass channels and site civil work; and
- a new west bypass conduit, east bypass conduit, final UV effluent channels, sample buildings, a new truck weigh scale, lighting, roads and landscaping.
The Ashbridges Bay Treatment Plant has been in operation since 1917 and is one of Canada’s largest and oldest wastewater treatment plants.
